Modernizing Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: Beyond the 2001 Criteria
For two decades, neonatologists relied on the 2001 Jobe-Bancalari criteria to classify Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia ($\text{BPD}$). However, modern surfactant replacement and non-invasive ventilation made old definitions obsolete.
The Jensen 2021 NICHD Consensus Criteria modernized BPD by classifying infants at $36\text{ weeks}$ PMA strictly based on the modality of respiratory support:
- Grade 1 (Mild): Low-flow nasal cannula ($\le 2\text{ L/min}$) with supplemental oxygen.
